Aart manipulates my head and neck several time per month in order to keep the fusion at bay and as a result, I am able maintain an active lifestyle. Heat and electrical nerve stimulation treatments have helped to reduce stiffness and mitigate some of the pain. He is always available for emergency assistance and spends a good deal of time with me in a relaxed, friendly, and encouraging fashion. This is quite different than the type of treatment I have seen from PT departments at the large local orthapedic practices, or at the big mill run by the hospital. Together with his excellent new associate Pete Barusic, Aart runs an open, fully equipped PT clinic where patients encourage each other while they recover from physical injury and regain skeletal and muscular health. Both therapists are quick to assist patients with adjusting routines and optimizing their exercises and use of equipment.
Over six years ago I was diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease of the cervical spine known as DISH. (Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis). This condition is both incurable and irreversible. It is characterized by the vertabrae in the cervical spine fusing together and is accompanied by pain, stiffness, and a loss of mobility of the head. I've been assessed by numerous physicians for this condition and have been placed on a regimen of NSAIDs and regular Physical Therapy to limit the total fusion of my neck and maintain some degree of mobility. At the beginning, I was fortunate to be referred to Greensboro Physical Therapy by my sister, and I have been receiving superb (literally) hands on care from Aart Schulenlkopper. Aart closely monitors my condition and has served as an advisor, coach and advocate for me as I've navigated the healthcare delivery system.
Most patients recover in weeks or months, but from my unique position of receiving treatment over 6 years, I have seen one constant throughout: in this practice they really care for you as an individual. I've recommended them to closed friends and even my mother-in-law with confidence. Next time you need this type of care, check them out. Remember you have a choice where you go for PT.
